Juan Luis Cebrián Echarri, born on October 30, 1944, is a well-known Spanish journalist and businessman. He is famous for helping to start a very important Spanish newspaper called El País. He also led a big media company, Prisa, from 2012 to 2017.

Growing Up and Learning
Juan Luis Cebrián was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1944. He went to the Universidad Complutense to study philosophy. He also earned a special degree from the Official School of Journalism. This helped him prepare for his career in media.
A Life in Media
Juan Luis Cebrián started his career by helping to create a political magazine called Cuadernos para el Dialogo. From 1963 to 1975, he worked at daily newspapers Pueblo and Informaciones de Madrid. He was a senior worker and a deputy editor there.
Founding El País
In 1976, Cebrián became the founding editor of the daily newspaper El País. He led the newspaper from 1976 to 1988. El País became one of the most important newspapers in Spain.
Leadership Roles
Between 1986 and 1988, Juan Luis Cebrián was the chairman of the International Press Institute (I.P.I). This is an organization that works to protect press freedom around the world.
In December 1996, Cebrián was chosen to be a member of the Real Academia Española. This is a very important group that looks after the Spanish language. He officially took his seat in May 1997.
He served as the chairman of PRISA, a large Spanish media group, from 2012 to 2017. He left all his main roles at PRISA on May 21, 2018.
Since May 2017, Cebrián has been the vice president of the Asociación de Medios de Información (AMI). This group represents media companies.
In April 2024, Juan Luis Cebrián was no longer the honorary president of El País. This happened after he started working with another online newspaper called "The Objective."
Cebrián also managed the news service for Televisión Española, which is a public television broadcaster in Spain.
Influence and Recognition
Many international media groups have said that Juan Luis Cebrián was one of the ten most influential Spaniards. This was true for a long time, from 1976 to 2019.
He was also the only Spanish-speaking member with important roles in the Bilderberg Club. This is a group of influential people who meet privately to discuss global issues.
Books and Writings
Between 1980 and 2016, Juan Luis Cebrián wrote and published 19 books in Spanish. These books included both fiction stories and essays. He also wrote the first part of his memoirs, which are stories about his own life.
