Who Was Juan de Licalde?

Juan de Licalde was an artist from Spain during the 17th century. This means he was active in the 1600s. He specialized in painting and drawing. Artists like Licalde often worked for the church, wealthy families, or even the king.

His Art Teacher and Early Work

Licalde learned his painting skills from another famous Spanish artist named Pedro de las Cuevas. Pedro de las Cuevas was a well-known teacher who trained many important painters of that time. Learning from a master like him was how artists developed their talents and learned different techniques.

A Special Lion Drawing

One of Licalde's known works is a detailed drawing he made using a pen. This drawing showed a crowned lion holding up a shield. This shield had the symbols, or "arms," of Spain and Portugal on it. These symbols were like the official logos of the kingdoms. This drawing was dated November 10, 1628. An art historian named Juan Agustín Ceán Bermúdez saw this drawing later in a collection owned by Don Pedro Gonzalez de Sepulveda.

Painting Important People

Juan de Licalde also created a clever portrait using pen and ink. This portrait was of the Duke of Olivarez. The Duke of Olivarez was a very important person in Spain at the time. He was a chief minister, which means he was a top advisor and helper to King Philip IV. Painting such an important figure shows that Licalde was a respected artist.
