Juan de Torrezar Díaz Pimienta, a Spanish leader in the Americas

Juan de Torrezar Díaz Pimienta (died 11 June 1782 in Bogotá) was a Spanish military officer and an important government official. He served as the governor of Cartagena de Indias twice. Later, he was promoted to be the viceroy of New Granada. A viceroy was like a king's representative in a colony.

Early Life and Career

Juan de Torrezar Díaz Pimienta was a high-ranking officer in the Spanish royal army. He was also a knight of the Order of Carlos III, which was a special award given for service to Spain. In 1779, he became a field marshal, a very senior military rank.

He was the governor of Cartagena two times. His first term was from 12 May 1774 to 14 September 1780. His second term was from 1 May 1781 to 21 April 1782.

During his time as governor, a lieutenant named Antonio de Latorre helped establish many new towns. They founded 43 towns where about 41,000 people came to live. One of these towns was Montería.

Becoming Viceroy of New Granada

Juan de Torrezar Díaz Pimienta officially became the viceroy of New Granada on 1 April 1782. He was still in Cartagena at that time. Before leaving Cartagena, he announced a special pardon for people involved in the Revolt of the Comuneros. This revolt was a big uprising by common people against Spanish rule.

On 21 April, he left Cartagena to travel to Santafé de Bogotá. Bogotá was the capital city of the viceroyalty. He was already quite old and not in good health.

He arrived in Bogotá on 7 June. He was very sick when he got there. Sadly, he died just four days later, on 11 June 1782. Official reports stated he died from an infection.
