Early Life and Artistic Family
Juan de Zurbarán was born in Llerena, Badajoz, Spain, in 1620. His father was the famous painter Francisco de Zurbarán, who lived from 1598 to 1664. Juan grew up in his father's art workshop in Seville. It is likely that they worked together on many paintings. This strong family influence can be seen in Juan's art. However, he also developed his own unique style, inspired by Dutch, Lombard, and Neapolitan artists.
His Art: Still Life Paintings
Juan de Zurbarán mostly painted still life pictures. These are paintings that show everyday objects, like fruit, flowers, or household items. His works are known for their realistic details and beautiful colors.
Some of his well-known paintings include:
- Still Life with Fruit and Goldfinch
- Still Life with Basket of Apples, Quinces and Pomegranates
These two paintings are kept at the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya in Spain. Another painting, Flowers and Fruits in Chinese Porcelain, can be seen at the Art Institute of Chicago.
A Short Life
In 1641, Juan de Zurbarán married Mariana de Cuadros, whose father was a wealthy merchant. Sadly, Mariana passed away not long after their marriage.
Juan de Zurbarán's own career was cut short when he was only 29 years old. He caught the plague during a serious outbreak in Seville in 1649. He died from the illness, along with several of his brothers.
