Juana Núñez de Lara (born 1286, died 1351) was an important noblewoman in the Kingdom of Castile during the Middle Ages. She was known as la Palomilla or Lady of Lara. Juana was the daughter of Juan Núñez de Lara the Fat and his wife Teresa Díaz II de Haro. Her family, the House of Lara, was one of the most powerful noble families in Castile.
Juana's Life Story
Juana's first marriage was to Infante Henry of Castile. He was a son of King Ferdinand III of Castile. This marriage did not have any children. Henry passed away in 1304, which made Juana a young widow.
Later, Juana married Ferdinand de la Cerda. Ferdinand was also from a very important family. His mother, Blanche of France, was a daughter of King Louis IX of France. This means Juana married into a family with strong connections to the French royal family.
Juana and Ferdinand had four children together:
- Juan Núñez III de Lara (1313–1350), who married Maria de Haro.
- Blanche Núñez de Lara (1311–1347), who married Juan Manuel, Prince of Villena.
- Margaret Núñez de Lara, who became a nun.
- Maria Núñez de Lara, who married Charles II of Alençon. She was the mother of Charles III of Alençon.
Their daughter, Blanca de La Cerda y Lara, became the mother of Juana Manuel of Castile. This Juana Manuel later married King Henry II of Castile. They had a son, who became King John I of Castile, and a daughter, Infanta Eleanor of Castile. This shows how Juana Núñez de Lara's family became connected to the royal line of Castile.
Juana's second husband, Ferdinand, died in 1322. Juana herself passed away in Palencia in 1351.
