Judith Young (born Rubin) was an American scientist. She was a physicist, an astronomer, and a teacher. She was born on September 15, 1952, and passed away on May 23, 2014.

In 1986, the American Physical Society gave Judith Young a special award. She received the very first Maria Goeppert-Mayer Award. This award recognized her as the best young physicist in the world. A famous astronomer named Nick Scoville said that her work was groundbreaking. She was one of the first to map carbon monoxide in galaxies. She also did wide-ranging studies of gas and star formation in nearby galaxies.

Judith Young's Education

Judith Young studied astronomy at Harvard University. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree with honors. Later, she went to the University of Minnesota. There, she earned her Master of Science (M.S.) and Ph.D. degrees in physics.

Her Work in Astronomy

In 1979, Judith Young started working at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She worked with Nick Z. Scoville. They studied the cold gas and carbon monoxide in galaxies. They made an important discovery. They found that the amount of light and gas in galaxies are connected. For this important work, she received the Annie J. Cannon Prize in 1982. This award is given by the American Astronomical Society.

Young became an assistant professor at UMass Amherst in 1985. She became an associate professor in 1989. By 1993, she was a Full Professor. She wrote over 130 scientific papers. She also guided five students who were getting their Ph.D. degrees. She helped 15 college students with their research projects.

One of her most famous projects was the Sunwheel. Young wanted to make astronomy easier to understand. She created the Sunwheel on an empty lot at the UMass-Amherst campus. Besides her university work, Young also volunteered. She helped out on campus and in her local community.

Her Family Life

Judith Young was born in Washington, D.C. Her mother was the famous astronomer Vera Rubin. Her father was Robert Joshua Rubin, a mathematical biophysicist. Her brother is the mathematician Karl Rubin.
