The Juglandaceae family is also known as the Walnut Family. It includes many types of trees and sometimes shrubs. These plants belong to a group called Fagales.
Their leaves are usually very long, about 20 to 100 cm. They are often "pinnately compound," meaning they have many small leaflets arranged along a central stem, like a feather. Sometimes, they are "ternate," which means they have three leaflets.
There are eight main groups, or genera, in this plant family. Some of the most important ones grow nuts that people love to eat. These include the walnut (from the Juglans group), the pecan (Carya illinoinensis), and the hickory (from the Carya group).
