Jugun facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Djugun people are an Aboriginal Australian group from the Kimberley area in Western Australia. They are also known by names like Jukun or Tjunung.

Years ago, some people thought the Djugun might disappear. But today, their families are still strong. Many Djugun descendants live and have families with the Yawuru people, who are another Aboriginal group.

Djugun Language

The Djugun people spoke a language closely related to the Yawuru language. It was like a special version, or dialect, of Yawuru. A Japanese expert named Hosokawa Kōmei studied this and confirmed it.

Traditional Lands

The Djugun people lived on their traditional lands, which covered about 400 square miles (1,000 km2). These lands stretched along the northern coast of Roebuck Bay. They went up the coast towards Willie Creek. Their country also reached about 15 miles (24 kilometers) inland from the coast.

Modern Times and Native Title

Today, the Djugun people are closely connected with the Yawuru people. Together, they formed a group that holds native title. Native title is a special legal recognition. It means that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have traditional rights and interests in land and waters.

In 2010, the Federal Court of Australia officially recognized the native title claim for the area around Broome. This was a big step for the Djugun and Yawuru people. It recognized their long-standing connection to their traditional lands.
