Juhan Jaagu Muks (born July 7, 1899 – died November 23, 1983) was a famous Estonian artist. He was known for his beautiful paintings, especially of the Estonian countryside.

Juhan Muks was born in a place called Tuhalaane in Viljandi County, Estonia. He studied art in other countries. After his studies, he came back to Estonia.

A New Way of Painting

When Juhan Muks returned to Estonia, he joined a group of artists. These artists included Adamson-Eric, Eduard Wiiralt, Lydia Mei, Kristjan Teder, Eduard Ole, and Felix Randel. They helped make a new art style popular in Estonia during the 1920s.

What Was New Objectivity?

This art style was called Neue Sachlichkeit. It means "New Objectivity." Artists using this style painted things very clearly and realistically. They focused on showing the world as it truly was, often with sharp details.

Art Shows for Everyone

Juhan Muks and his friends also started something important. They began holding art exhibitions all over Estonia. This meant more people could see and enjoy art. Juhan Muks is most famous for his paintings of farms and nature scenes in Estonia.

Winning an Art Award

Juhan Muks was a very talented artist. He even won the Konrad Mägi Award. This is a special prize given every year to an Estonian artist. It celebrates art that has made Estonian painting better and richer. The award includes a medal and money.

His Later Life

Juhan Muks passed away on November 23, 1983, in Viljandi. He was buried in the Viljandi Metsakalmistu cemetery. His art continues to be an important part of Estonian culture.
