Julio Rossi's Football Journey
Starting Out in Argentina
Julio Hernán Rossi began his professional football journey in July 1995. He joined the famous Argentinian club Club Atlético River Plate. He had moved up from their youth team to play with the main squad. During his time at River Plate, he also had a short loan period in Japan. He played for a team called Avispa Fukuoka for six months.
Shining in Switzerland with Lugano
In 1998, Julio Rossi moved to Switzerland and joined FC Lugano. He quickly became a favorite with fans because he was skilled, fast, and scored many goals. He teamed up well with another Argentine player, Christian Giménez. Together, they helped Lugano play very well in the league.
Sadly, Lugano later faced money problems. They had to sell their best players, including Julio, to try and fix things. Even with the money from Julio's transfer, the club later lost its license to play in the top league.
Success with FC Basel
On April 3, 2002, Julio Rossi signed with FC Basel, another top Swiss team. He joined them for the 2002–03 season. His first league game for Basel was on July 17, 2002, against Young Boys. He scored his first goal for Basel on July 27, helping his team draw 1–1 against St. Gallen.
Playing in the Champions League
Julio played a big part in Basel's 2002–03 UEFA Champions League journey. They made it to the group stage and even the second group stage. They played against big teams like Valencia, Liverpool, Manchester United, and Juventus. Julio played in all 16 of these European matches and scored five goals.
Winning Trophies
In the 2002–03 season, Basel finished second in the league. However, they won the Swiss Cup by beating Xamax 6–0 in the final. This meant they defended their cup title from the previous year.
The 2003–04 season was even better for Basel. They started incredibly well, winning their first 13 matches in a row. They went on to win the Swiss championship with 85 points. They only lost three away games all season.
More European Adventures
Basel continued to play in European competitions. In the 2004–05 Champions League, they faced Internazionale and then moved to the 2004–05 UEFA Cup. They reached the group stage and then the knock-out stage. Julio played in all ten of these games, scoring one goal.
Basel also had a great 2004–05 Super League season. They did not lose any of their 17 home games. They won the Swiss championship again, finishing 10 points ahead of Thun.
In the 2005–06 Champions League, Basel played against Werder Bremen. After that, they moved to the 2005–06 UEFA Cup group stage. Julio played in seven of these eight games and scored two goals. He left Basel during the winter break of the 2005–06 season.
Overall, Julio Rossi played 226 games for Basel and scored 89 goals. He scored 36 goals in the league, eight in the cup, and eight in European matches.
Later Career Years
In 2006, Julio Rossi moved to France to play for FC Nantes in Ligue 1. However, the club was moved down to a lower league in 2007. After that, he left Nantes as a free player.
He returned to Switzerland for the 2007–08 Swiss Super League season. He joined Neuchâtel Xamax. In his first year there, he played regularly. But in his second season, he played less often. In April 2010, he was moved to the club's Under-21 team. After July 2010, Julio was without a club for a year. In the 2011–12 season, he played in Switzerland's top amateur league for FC Serrières.
