Julio Hernán Rossi's Football Journey
Starting Out
Julio Hernán Rossi started his professional football journey in July 1995. He joined the first team of the Argentinian club Club Atlético River Plate, moving up from their youth squad. During his time at River Plate, he also had a short loan period in Japan. He played for Avispa Fukuoka in the J1 League, but it wasn't a very successful time for him there.
Playing for Lugano
In 1998, after his contract with River Plate ended, Rossi moved to Switzerland. He joined FC Lugano in the Swiss Super League. Fans quickly loved him because he was very skilled, fast, and great at scoring goals.
He formed a strong attacking team with another Argentine player, Christian Giménez. Their teamwork helped Lugano do well in the league. However, the club faced money problems. They had to sell Giménez first, and then a year later, Rossi. Even with these sales, Lugano later lost its license to play in the top league because of its financial issues.
Success with Basel
On April 3, 2002, Rossi signed with FC Basel, who were Swiss champions. He joined their team for the 2002–03 FC Basel season. He made his first league appearance for Basel on July 17, 2002, in a 1–1 draw against Young Boys.
He scored his first goal for Basel on July 27, helping them draw 1–1 with St. Gallen. Rossi also played a big part in Basel's 2002–03 UEFA Champions League journey. They made it to the group stage and then even to the second group stage, playing against big teams like Liverpool and Manchester United. Rossi played in all 16 of these European matches and scored five goals. That season, Basel finished second in the league but won the Swiss Cup, beating Xamax 6–0.
In the 2003–04 Swiss Super League season, Basel started incredibly well, winning their first 13 games in a row! They went on to win the championship with 85 points, losing only three away games.
Basel continued to play in European competitions. In the 2004–05 UEFA Champions League, they faced Internazionale and then moved to the 2004–05 UEFA Cup. They reached the group stage and even the knock-out stage, playing against teams like Schalke 04 and Feyenoord. Rossi played in all ten of these European games, scoring one goal. Basel also won the 2004–05 Swiss Super League that season, staying undefeated in all their home games.
Rossi played in 18 games during the first half of the 2005–06 Swiss Super League season. He left Basel during the winter break. Overall, he played 226 games for Basel and scored 89 goals. This included 112 league games where he scored 36 goals, and 37 European games where he scored eight goals.
Later Career
In 2006, Rossi moved to France to play for FC Nantes in Ligue 1. However, the club was relegated (moved down to a lower league) in 2007, and he was released.
He then returned to Switzerland for the 2007–08 Swiss Super League season, joining Neuchâtel Xamax. In his first season, he played regularly. But in his second year, he had less playing time. In April 2010, he was moved to the club's U-21 (under 21) squad. After July 2010, Rossi was without a club for a year. In the 2011–12 season, he played in Switzerland's highest amateur league with FC Serrières.
