Junín is a city located in Central Peru. It is the capital of the Junín Province within the Junín Department.

The city is found on the southern shore of Lake Junín. It sits at a very high elevation of 4,107 meters (about 13,474 feet) above sea level.

Junín was first established as the "Town of Kings" in 1539. It was later officially recognized as a city on October 27, 1943. This happened during the time when Manuel Prado Ugarteche was president.

Famous People from Junín

Junín is the hometown of two well-known Olympic marathon runners. These athletes are Raúl Pacheco and Gladys Tejeda. They have both competed in the Olympic Games.
