Junius Chatman, Jr. (born March 29, 1956) is an American who used to play professional tennis. He was a talented athlete who made history in his sport.

Junie Chatman's College Journey

Junie Chatman grew up in Richmond, Virginia. He became the first African American to get a tennis scholarship to the University of North Carolina. This was a big achievement! While in college, he won four major championships in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). He won three titles in singles (playing by himself) and one in doubles (playing with a partner). He finished college in 1978.

His Pro Tennis Career

After college, Junie Chatman became a professional tennis player. He reached a high ranking of 219 in the world for singles players. In 1982, he did very well in some big tournaments. He made it to the "round of 16" (meaning he was one of the last 16 players left) at tournaments in Stuttgart and Hilversum. He also had an exciting win in doubles at a tournament in Rotterdam, where he and his partner beat famous tennis star Jimmy Connors and his partner. Junie Chatman also won three doubles titles on the ATP Challenger Tour, which is a series of tournaments for rising tennis players.
