Justicia Espada Acuña Mena (born January 14, 1893 – died 1980) was a Chilean civil engineer. She made history by becoming the first woman civil engineer in Chile. This was a big step forward for women in science and engineering in her country.

Life Story
Justicia Acuña Mena was born in Santiago, Chile, on January 14, 1893. Her father, José Acuña Latorre, was also an engineer. Justicia grew up with eight brothers and sisters. She went to school at the Liceo de Aplicación and then the Instituto Pedagógico.
Becoming an Engineer
In 1913, Justicia decided to change her studies. She switched from mathematics to civil engineering. She joined the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences at the University of Chile. At that time, she was the only woman studying engineering there. She worked hard and graduated as a civil engineer in 1919. Another famous person, Jorge Alessandri, graduated with her.
Working Life
In 1920, Acuña started her career. She worked as a calculator for the Department of Roads and Works. This department was part of the Empresa de los Ferrocarriles del Estado, which managed the state railways.
During her time at Empresa, she took breaks to raise her seven children. However, she always returned to her job. She continued working until she retired in 1954. Justicia Acuña passed away in Santiago in 1980.
Honors and Awards
Justicia Acuña's hard work and achievements were recognized. She helped open doors for other women in engineering.
Gallery of Illustrious Engineers
In July 1980, the Chilean College of Engineers honored her. They created a "Gallery of Illustrious Engineers." Justicia Acuña was one of the first people included in this special gallery.
Justicia Acuña Mena Award
In 1991, an award was created in her name. The "Justicia Acuña Mena Award" is given every two years. It celebrates an outstanding woman engineer who has done great work in her profession.
