Jutiapa is a small town, also called a municipality, located in the Cabañas department of El Salvador. In 2015, more than 7,000 people lived there.
A Look Back in Time
Jutiapa is a very old place. It was settled long before Christopher Columbus arrived in the Americas. Its first name was Tepeahua.
In 1740, only about 25 people lived in Jutiapa. By 1770, the population grew to 189. At that time, it was part of the Suchitoto area.
Between 1824 and 1835, Jutiapa was part of the San Salvador department. Later, it became part of the Cuscatlan department. In 1859, Jutiapa had 1,772 residents. Nearby, there were farms that grew indigo, a plant used to make blue dye.
On February 10, 1873, Jutiapa officially became part of the Cabañas department. It was given the special title of "town" on January 25, 1879.

The Jutiapa municipality covers an area of 67.12 square kilometers. It is located at an altitude of 380 meters above sea level.
The town celebrates its main festivities in November. These celebrations honor San Cristobal.
The original name, Tepeahua, means "Hill of Oaks" or "Place of oaks." The name Jutiapa means "River of the Jutes." Over the years, the town has been known by different names, including Tepeagua (in 1548), San Cristóbal Jutiapa (in 1740), and Jutiapa (from 1770 to 1807).
