Königsberg marzipan is a special kind of marzipan. It was traditionally made in the city of Königsberg, which is now called Kaliningrad and is part of Russia.

The first people to make Königsberg marzipan were the Pomatti brothers in 1809. They became official candy makers for the King of Prussia. Other famous marzipan makers joined them later, like Sterkau, Petschliess, and Gehlhaar.

What makes Königsberg marzipan special? It has a unique "flamed" surface. This means it's lightly toasted, giving it a golden-brown color. It also often contains rose water and is filled with jam. These features make it different from other types, like Lübeck Marzipan.

Who Made It?

After World War II, Königsberg became part of the Soviet Union. This happened because of an agreement called the Potsdam Agreement. Most German people who lived there either moved away or were asked to leave. Because of this, the traditional way of making marzipan in Königsberg stopped.

However, some candy makers kept the Königsberg marzipan style alive. One important company was Gehlhaar, which had a candy shop in Wiesbaden, Germany. Gehlhaar started in 1912. In the early 1900s, Gehlhaar and Schwermer were two of the biggest marzipan makers in Königsberg. Today, they continue to make marzipan candies in the traditional Königsberg style.
