Early Life and Family
Kūkaniloko was born on the island of Oʻahu. Her father was High Chief Piliwale, and her mother was High Chiefess Paʻakanilea.
Kūkaniloko had a younger sister named Kohipalaoa. These two sisters were the only children of Chief Piliwale. He did not have any sons.
Becoming a Ruler
After her father Piliwale passed away, Kūkaniloko became the new ruler of Oʻahu. This was a very special event. She was the first woman to rule the entire island of Oʻahu.
Before Kūkaniloko, some women like Mualani had ruled parts of Oʻahu. But Kūkaniloko was the first to be in charge of the whole island. This made her a very significant leader in Hawaiian history.
Her Marriage and Children
