Mualani facts for kids
Mualani (also known as Muolani or Mua) was an important leader, a High Chiefess, in ancient Hawaii. She lived on the island of Oahu and was a Princess of Koʻolau. The name lani in Hawaiian means "heaven" or "sky," showing her high rank.
Mualani was the daughter of Princess Hinakaimauliʻawa of Koʻolau. Her mother was the daughter of Chief Kalehenui. Mualani's father was named Kahiwakaʻapu. Her family had roots in Tahiti, as she was a descendant of a wise leader named Maweke who traveled to Oahu from Tahiti. After her mother passed away, Mualani became the new Chiefess.
Mualani's Family
Mualani had one known partner, a man named Kaomealani (also called Kaʻomea or Kaomealani I). We don't know much about his parents because their names were not written down in old Hawaiian chants.
Mualani and Kaomealani had two children: a son named Kua-o-Mua and a daughter named Kapua-a-Mua. Kua-o-Mua later became the leader after his mother. In ancient Hawaiian society, some unions were considered very special and sacred, especially among high-ranking chiefs. Kua-o-Mua and Kapua-a-Mua had a child named Kawalewaleoku. He was a very important chief in Koʻolau, and his rank was considered extremely high, almost like a god. Kawalewaleoku later married a woman named Unaʻula, and their son was Chief Kaulaulaokalani. Kaulaulaokalani was the father of Chiefess Kaimihauoku.
