Kids Encyclopedia Facts

KIIS-FM (102.7 FM) is a popular radio station in Los Angeles, California, United States. It plays "top 40" music, which means it broadcasts the most popular songs right now. KIIS-FM is owned by a company called iHeartMedia, Inc.

History of KIIS-FM

The radio station first started broadcasting in 1948. Back then, it was known as KLAC-FM. At that time, it played pop music for its listeners.

Changes in the 1960s and 1970s

In 1967, the station changed its name, also called its "call sign," to KRHM. It started playing "soft music," which is a type of soft rock.

A few years later, in 1971, KRHM changed its name again to KKDJ. It switched to a "top 40" music format. This meant it played the most popular songs of the day. For a short time in 1975, KKDJ tried a different style called "adult contemporary" or soft rock. But this change was not very successful.

Becoming KIIS-FM

The station changed its name to KIIS-FM in 1975. It went back to playing top 40 music, which was what its listeners liked best. The name KIIS sounds like the word "kiss." However, the station's name has nothing to do with kissing.

The name is spelled with two "I"s instead of two "S"s. This is because the station got its name from another radio station owned by the same company. That other station was an AM radio station at 1150 on the dial. The numbers "115" look a bit like "IIS," which is how KIIS got its unique spelling.

Famous Radio Hosts

Over the years, KIIS-FM has had many well-known radio hosts. Some of these famous voices include Rick Dees and Ryan Seacrest. They helped make the station very popular.
