Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Ka was a very important idea in ancient Egypt. It was one of the five main parts of a person's soul. Think of the Ka as a person's life force or spirit. It was what made someone alive and unique.

The ancient Egyptians believed that when a person died, their Ka would leave their body. But it didn't just disappear! They thought the Ka still needed to be nourished, just like a living person. This is why people would place food and drink offerings with the dead. These offerings were meant to feed the Ka in the afterlife.

The Ka's Journey After Death

The Egyptians had complex beliefs about what happened after death. They believed that the Ka, along with another part of the soul called the Ba, would join together. This joining was thought to happen with the help of a god named Nehebkau. After they reunited, the Ka and Ba would then travel into the Duat, which was the Egyptian underworld or spirit world. This journey was a key part of their beliefs about eternal life.
