Kahekili II, whose full name was Kahekilinuiʻahumanu, was a very important ruler, known as an ali'i or Moʻi, of the island of Maui. He lived from about 1737 to 1794. His name, Kahekili, was a shorter version of Kāne-Hekili, who was the Hawaiian god of thunder.

People believed that Kāne-Hekili, the thunder god, was black on one side of his body. Because of this, Kahekili II had one side of his body completely tattooed from his head down to his feet. European explorers who visited Hawaii called him Titeeree, King of Mowee.

Who Was Kahekili II?

Kahekili II was born around 1737 in a place called Hāliʻimaile on the island of Maui. He became the powerful ruler of Maui, leading his people and land. He passed away in July 1794 in Waikīkī.

His Family and Relatives

Kahekili II came from a royal family. His father was Kekaulike Kalani-nui-Kui-Hono-i-Kamoku, who was the 23rd Moʻi (ruler) of Maui. His mother was Kekuaipoiwa-nui Kalani-kauhihiwakama Wanakapu, also known as Kekuiapoiwa I. Interestingly, his mother was also his father's half-sister.

Kahekili II had at least two wives. He was a father to several children, including three or four sons and two daughters. His sister was named Kalola.

There is a belief that Kahekili II might have been the biological father of Kamehameha I, who later united the Hawaiian Islands. Kamehameha I was told this and was shown things that supported this idea.
