Kalan Haywood II, born on June 5, 1999, is a young American politician from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He is a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly, which is a group of people who make laws for the state of Wisconsin. He has represented his area, the 16th Assembly district, since 2019. Since 2022, he has also been the assistant minority leader in the Assembly.
Kalan Haywood is one of the youngest people ever chosen to work in the Wisconsin Legislature. He was only 19 years old when he started his first term. This makes him one of the youngest lawmakers in the entire United States.
Early Life and Education
Kalan Haywood was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on June 5, 1999. He went to Rufus King International High School. After high school, he studied at Cardinal Stritch University. When that university closed in 2023, he began attending the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He is currently studying finance there.
Kalan Haywood's father, Kalan Haywood Sr., is a well-known person in Milwaukee. He started a company that builds and develops real estate.
Political Career and Leadership
Before becoming a state lawmaker, Kalan Haywood was very active in his community. He was the president of the City of Milwaukee Youth Council. This council helps young people have a say in city decisions. He also worked as a consultant for non-profit groups. These groups work to help people and communities. He was also part of a committee that focused on "restorative justice" in Milwaukee. This idea helps people fix harm caused by crime and conflict.
In 2018, when Kalan Haywood was just 19 years old, he won an important election. First, he won the Democratic primary election in August. This is when members of a political party choose who will represent them in the main election. Then, he won the general election in November. This made him the youngest person serving in the Wisconsin Assembly. He was also one of the youngest lawmakers in all of America.
In the fall of 2021, the Democratic members of the Assembly chose Kalan Haywood for a new leadership role. They elected him as their assistant minority leader. This means he helps lead the group of lawmakers who are not in the main ruling party.
