Kalle Juhonpoika Hakala (born March 18, 1880 – died May 16, 1947) was an important person in Finland. He worked as a newspaper editor. He was also a politician and a member of the Parliament of Finland. The Parliament is Finland's main law-making body.

Kalle Hakala was part of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). He represented the Mikkeli Province area. He served in Parliament for many years. He was a member from 1911 to 1918, then from 1924 to 1933, and again from 1934 to 1947.

Early Life and Work

Kalle Hakala was born on March 18, 1880. His birthplace was Lempäälä, in what was then the Grand Duchy of Finland. His father, Juha Hakala, was a farmworker. His mother was Wilhelmina Myllymäki.

Before becoming a politician, Kalle Hakala worked as a machinist. He did this job from 1897 to 1907. Later, he became an editor for the Vapaus newspaper. He worked at the newspaper in Mikkeli from 1907 to 1918.

Political Beginnings and Challenges

Kalle Hakala first became a member of the Parliament of Finland in 1911. People voted for him in several elections. He was re-elected in 1913, 1916, and 1917.

Finland went through a difficult time with the Finnish Civil War. This happened in 1918. During this time, Kalle Hakala was chosen to be part of the Central Workers' Council of Finland. This council was part of the side known as the "Reds." He worked as a secretary for their agriculture department.

After the civil war ended, Kalle Hakala faced problems. He was among many politicians from the Social Democratic Party who were accused of supporting the losing side. In October 1918, he was found responsible for helping the "Red" side. He was sentenced to prison.

However, he did not serve a long time. In June 1919, the leader of Finland, Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim, gave him a pardon. This meant his punishment was cancelled. Kalle Hakala was released from prison. He was set free on Midsummer Eve in 1919.

Return to Public Service

After his release, Kalle Hakala continued his work. From 1921 to 1925, he was a literary editor for a co-operative in Mikkeli. He also became the editor-in-chief of the Vapaus newspaper again. He held this important role from 1933 until 1947.

He returned to the Parliament of Finland in 1924. He was re-elected many times after that. He served in Parliament through the 1920s, 1930s, and into the 1940s. He was a member of Parliament during important times in Finnish history.

Kalle Hakala also took part in presidential elections. He was an elector in 1931, 1937, 1940, and 1943. These elections chose the president of Finland. He was also a member of the Mikkeli City Council, helping to make decisions for his local city.

After the Continuation War, Finland faced a new challenge. Kalle Hakala was chosen to be a judge in special trials. These trials looked at the actions of political leaders during the war. He was one of twelve judges. In February 1946, he voted to find the leaders responsible for their wartime decisions.

Kalle Hakala passed away on May 16, 1947, in Mikkeli. He had been ill for some time.

Family Life

Kalle Hakala was married twice. His first wife was Alma Maria Purhonen. They were married from 1911 to 1927. Later, he married Aliina Partti in 1928.
