Who Was Kamalalawalu?
Kamalalawalu was the son of Chief Kiha-a-Piilani and Queen Kumaka. His grandfather was Piʻilani, and his aunt was Queen Piʻikea. He became a powerful leader, following in his father's footsteps.
His Family and Children
Kamalalawalu married a woman named Piʻilaniwahine I. Together, they had several children:
- Kalakauaʻehu (a son)
- Paikalakaua (a son)
- Piʻilani-Kapokulani (a daughter)
- Kekaikuihaiaokekuʻimanono (a daughter)
- Umikalakaua (a son)
- Kaunoho I (a son)
- Kauhiakama (a son who later became ruler after Kamalalawalu)
Naming the Island of Maui
It was Kamalalawalu who gave the island its special name, Maui-of-Kama. This name helps us remember his connection to the island.
Ancient Rock Carvings
You can still see ancient rock carvings, called petroglyphs, that might show a battle where Kamalalawalu was defeated by another chief named Lonoikamakahiki. These carvings are found near the old temples at Kahaluu Bay when the tide is low.
