Kamel Daoud (Arabic: كمال داود) is an Algerian writer and journalist. He was born on June 17, 1970. He works for a French-language newspaper called Le quotidien d’Oran. He writes a popular column there called "Raïna Raïkoum," which means "Our Opinion, Your Opinion." In this column, he often shares his thoughts on the news.

Early Life and Education

Kamel Daoud was born in Mostaganem, Algeria. He was born on June 17, 1970. He was the oldest of six children. He grew up in a Muslim family that spoke Arabic. He studied French literature at the University of Oran. Kamel Daoud has two children, a son and a daughter. He dedicated his first novel, The Meursault Investigation, to them.

Becoming a Journalist

In 1994, Kamel Daoud started working at Le Quotidien d'Oran. This is a newspaper in Algeria written in French. Three years later, in 1997, he began writing his own column. It was called "Raina raikoum," which means "Our opinion, your opinion." He was the Editor in Chief of the newspaper for eight years. This means he was in charge of all the news and articles. He also writes for other news websites and newspapers.

His Books and Writings

Kamel Daoud's first novel is called The Meursault Investigation. It was published in 2013. This book won several important awards. It won the Prix Goncourt du Premier Roman, which is a big award for a first novel. It also won the prix François Mauriac and the Prix des cinq continents de la francophonie.

In April 2015, a part of The Meursault Investigation was shown in New Yorker magazine. In November 2015, Kamel Daoud wrote an opinion piece for New York Times newspaper. It was called "Saudi Arabia, an ISIS That Has Made It." He wrote another opinion piece for the New York Times in February 2016. These articles were later put into a collection of his essays in 2017. The collection is called Mes Indépendances.

In 2018, articles he wrote for Le Quotidien d'Oran between 2010 and 2016 were translated into English. In 2024, his novel Houris was awarded the Prix Goncourt.
