Kamel Daoud (born June 17, 1970) is a famous writer and journalist from Algeria. He writes in French. He works for a newspaper called Le quotidien d’Oran. He also writes a popular column there called "Raïna Raïkoum," which means "Our Opinion, Your Opinion." In this column, he often shares his thoughts on the news.

His Early Life and Studies

Kamel Daoud was born in Mostaganem, Algeria, on June 17, 1970. He was the oldest of six children. He grew up in an Arabic-speaking family in Algeria. Later, he studied French literature at the University of Oran.

Kamel Daoud has two children, a son and a daughter. He dedicated his well-known novel The Meursault Investigation to them.

Becoming a Journalist

In 1994, Kamel Daoud started working for Le Quotidien d'Oran. This is a newspaper in Algeria that is written in French. Three years later, he began writing his first column. It was called "Raina raikoum," meaning "Our opinion, your opinion."

He worked as the Editor in Chief of the newspaper for eight years. He also writes columns for other media. His articles have appeared in Algérie-Focus and Slate Afrique.

His Books and Writings

Kamel Daoud's first novel is called The Meursault Investigation. In French, its title is Meursault, contre-enquête. This book was published in 2013. It won several important awards. These include the Prix Goncourt du Premier Roman and the prix François Mauriac. It also won the Prix des cinq continents de la francophonie.

In 2015, a part of Meursault, contre-enquête was printed in New Yorker magazine. Later that year, the New York Times published an opinion piece by Daoud. It was titled "Saudi Arabia, an ISIS That Has Made It." This article was available in both English and French.

In 2016, the New York Times published another opinion piece by him. It was called "The ... Misery of the Arab World." This article was translated into English, French, and Arabic. Both of these articles were later put into a collection of his essays. This collection was published in 2017 and called Mes Indépendances.

In 2018, articles he wrote for Le Quotidien d'Oran were translated into English. These articles were from 2010 to 2016. In 2024, his novel Houris was awarded the Prix Goncourt.
