Kamloops Memorial Arena facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Kamloops Memorial Arena is a special building in Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada. It was built in 1948 and is mainly used for ice hockey. Many famous hockey teams played here, like the Kamloops Chiefs, the Kamloops Junior Oilers, and the well-known Kamloops Blazers. Even though a new arena, the Sandman Centre, took its place in 1992, the Memorial Arena is still used today for hockey games and lacrosse.

Building a Community Dream

The Kamloops Memorial Arena was built because many groups in the community worked together. People in Kamloops really wanted this arena. They found creative ways to raise money, like holding raffles, and everyone helped out. Building such a big project with so much community effort showed how much the people of Kamloops could achieve together. It also served as a way to remember the brave people who fought in World War I and World War II. The arena was designed by an architect named C.B.K. Norman and built by J.C. Taylor & Son. It officially opened its doors in 1949.
