Kamnaskires III (also called Kammashkiri III) was a king of a land called Elymais. He ruled from about 82 BC to 75 BC. Elymais had been controlled by the powerful Parthian Empire since 124 BC.
Kamnaskires III Becomes King
In 81 or 80 BC, something important happened. Coins appeared with the images of King Kamnaskires III and his wife, Anzaze. These coins showed that the kingdom of Elymais was independent again. It was no longer fully controlled by the Parthians.
Conflict with Parthia
However, this independence did not last forever. In 78 BC, the Parthian king, Orodes I, led an army into Elymais. He fought against Kamnaskires III and won the battle.
Elymais as a Vassal Kingdom
Even though Kamnaskires III was defeated, he was not removed from power. He continued to rule Elymais. But now, his kingdom was a "vassal" state. This means Elymais had to obey the Parthian Empire and pay taxes to them. Kamnaskires III's rule ended around 75 BC. We don't know who became king right after him. However, we do know that Kamnaskires IV ruled Elymais later, starting in 62 or 61 BC.
