Kan Bahlam I (born September 18, 524 – died February 1, 583) was an important ruler, known as an ajaw, of the ancient Maya city of Palenque. He became king on April 6, 572, when he was 47 years old, and ruled until his death. Kan Bahlam I was likely the younger brother of the previous ruler, Ahkal Moʼ Nahb II, and probably the son of Kʼan Joy Chitam I.

He was the first ruler of Palenque to use the special title K'inich. This title is usually translated as "radiant" or "shining," but it literally means "sun-faced." He did not always use this title, but it became common for later Palenque rulers.

Who Was Kan Bahlam I?

Kan Bahlam I was born in Palenque on September 18, 524. He lived during a time when the Maya civilization was very powerful. As an ajaw, he was the main leader of his city-state. This meant he was in charge of the government, religion, and military.

His reign began when he was already an adult. He took the throne after his likely brother, Ahkal Mo' Nahb II. Kan Bahlam I ruled Palenque for about 11 years.

His Time as Ruler

Kan Bahlam I's rule lasted from April 6, 572, to February 1, 583. During his time, Palenque was an important center of Maya culture. Rulers like Kan Bahlam I were responsible for the well-being of their people. They also oversaw the construction of grand temples and palaces.

The Maya people believed their rulers had a special connection to the gods. This made the ajaw a very powerful and respected figure in society. Kan Bahlam I's use of the "K'inich" title might have been a way to show his divine connection.
