Kandiwal, sometimes spelled Kandijwal, is a small Aboriginal community in Western Australia. It is located in the beautiful Kimberley region. This area is part of the Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley.
What is Native Title?
The Kandiwal community is located within the Uunguu native title claim area. Native title means that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have special rights to their traditional lands and waters. These rights come from their traditional laws and customs. The Uunguu claim was officially recognized in 1999. This recognition helps protect the cultural connection of the traditional owners to their land.
How Kandiwal is Managed
The Kandiwal community is managed by its own group called Kandiwal (Aboriginal Corporation). This group was officially set up in 1987. An "Aboriginal Corporation" is like a local organization. It helps the community make important decisions about their daily lives. This includes managing resources and planning for the future. It ensures the community has a say in how things are run.
Planning for the Future
Kandiwal has a special plan called Layout Plan No.1. This plan helps guide how the community will grow and develop. It's like a blueprint for buildings and services. The plan was created following State Planning Policy 3.2 Aboriginal Settlements. This policy helps make sure that Aboriginal communities are planned well. The community approved their plan on April 28, 2010. The Western Australian Planning Commission also approved it on June 8, 2010. This plan helps ensure the community has a safe and organized place to live.
