Kansai Ki-in facts for kids
The Kansai Ki-in is a special group for the game of Go in Japan. It was started by Hashimoto Utaro in 1950. While it's not as big as the main Go group in Japan, the Nihon Ki-in, the Kansai Ki-in also helps train professional Go players and gives out special awards (called diplomas) to very strong players.
How the Kansai Ki-in Started
After World War II, it was very hard for people to travel in Japan. Go players living in the Osaka area found it difficult to go all the way to Tokyo for Go events organized by the main group, the Nihon Ki-in.
Because of this, the Nihon Ki-in had set up a branch in western Japan. But in 1950, a disagreement happened over an important Go championship title called "Honinbo." This disagreement led the western branch to decide it wanted to be independent. That's how the Kansai Ki-in was formed as its own separate organization.
