Team History
The Kansas Koyotes started playing in 2003. They quickly became a very strong team.
Early Success and Championships
In their first few years, the Koyotes were almost unbeatable in the APFL. They had perfect seasons in 2003, 2004, and 2005. They won the APFL Bowl, which is like the championship game, three times in a row. In 2003 and 2004, they beat the Missouri Minutemen for the title. In 2005, they won their third APFL Bowl against the Iowa Blackhawks with a last-second field goal. Their amazing winning streak lasted for 31 games, including practice games and playoff games.
A running back coach named Brian Hebert helped the team a lot. He worked with five great running backs, including Donnell Smith. This strong running game helped the Koyotes win their first championship in 2003. A former Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl champion, Clayton Holmes, also played for the Koyotes in 2003.
First Losses and New Challenges
In 2006, the Koyotes finally lost their first game. They were defeated by the Wichita Aviators in Wichita. They lost to the Aviators again that season. The two teams were supposed to play for the APFL Bowl IV in Wichita. However, the game was moved to Landon Arena in Topeka.
In 2007, the Koyotes kept winning all their home games. They only lost two games when playing away. They went on to win APFL Bowl V against the Iowa Blackhawks.
A Woman Kicker Makes History
During the 2007 season, something special happened. The Koyotes signed Abby Vestal as their kicker. On April 23, Abby Vestal kicked three extra points. This made her the first woman to score points in a professional men's football game! Abby Vestal was a talented soccer player. She had a scholarship to play soccer at Johnson County Community College.
Joining a New League
In 2013, the Koyotes joined a new league called the Champions Professional Indoor Football League (CPIFL). This league had stronger teams. The Koyotes found it much harder to win games. They finished with only two wins and 22 losses over their last two seasons.
After the 2014 season, the Koyotes announced they would leave the CPIFL. They planned to play as an independent team in 2015. They said they would have eight home games. However, none of these games were ever played. The team seemed to stop playing football after that.
