Karel Purkyně was an important painter from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He was born in Wrocław on March 15, 1834, and passed away in Prague on April 5, 1868. Karel Purkyně was one of the leading artists who used a style called realism in Czech art during the second half of the 1800s. Realism in art means painting things exactly as they look in real life, without making them look more beautiful or dramatic than they are.

A Young Artist's Journey

Karel Purkyně was the son of a famous scientist named Jan Evangelista Purkyně. His father was a physiologist, which means he studied how living things work, and an anatomist, meaning he studied the structure of bodies. From a young age, Karel showed a strong interest in art.

Early Art Influences

Karel Purkyně was inspired by many different artists. He admired Baroque painters like Karel Škréta and Petr Brandl. He also loved the paintings from the Dutch Golden Age, a time when Dutch art was very famous.

Studying Art Abroad

To learn more about art, Karel Purkyně traveled to other countries. He spent a year in Munich, where he studied with a teacher named Johann Baptist Berdelle. After that, he went to Paris, France. In Paris, he worked with a well-known artist named Thomas Couture.

While in Paris, Karel Purkyně copied paintings by the Old Masters. These were famous artists from earlier times. He also saw the work of artists who were painting at the same time as him. He was especially impressed by the paintings of Gustave Courbet, another artist known for his realistic style.

Return to Prague

When Karel Purkyně came back to Prague, he became famous mainly for painting portraits. A portrait is a painting of a person. He was very good at capturing how people looked and felt.

Even though he was best known for portraits, he also created a few other types of paintings. Besides being an artist, Karel Purkyně was also important in the art world as an organizer. He helped put together art events. He was also an art critic, meaning he wrote about and judged other artists' work.
