A Busy Hub for Local Businesses
Karere Station was very important for local businesses. Goods made in the area were loaded onto trains. These trains took the goods to Foxton's port. From there, the goods were shipped to other places.
Growing Cargo Needs
In 1930, the station's cargo area was made bigger. This was because local businesses needed more space. They had many goods to send out. New additions included a small ramp and a yard for cattle.
Station Damaged by a Cyclone
In 1936, a strong cyclone hit the area. It caused a lot of damage. The cyclone destroyed the station's passenger shelter. Newspapers reported that the wind picked up the building. It then threw it across the railway tracks. The shelter was never rebuilt after this storm. The same cyclone also damaged the Terrace End railway station.
The End of the Line
The Foxton branch line closed down in 1959. The train tracks were removed. Today, a concrete platform from the old station still remains. You can find it along State Highway 56.
