Her mother, Margit Buen, was also a traditional musician. Kari had three siblings who became musicians: Hauk Buen, Knut Buen, and Agnes Buen Garnås. Kari Buen dedicated many years to studying art. From 1958 to 1960, she attended the Art School in Trondheim. There, she learned from the artist Karl Johan Flåthen. Later, she studied at the Norwegian National Academy of Fine Arts in Oslo. Her teachers there included Per Palle Storm and Roar Wold during 1963-1966 and 1973-1974. Kari also studied at Rauland Academy from 1978 to 1979 with Knut Skinnarland. She first showed her art to the public at the Autumn Exhibition in Oslo in 1960. This was a big step in her career.
