Karl Elsener (born October 9, 1860 – died December 26, 1918) was a clever Swiss inventor and businessman. He is most famous for creating the original Swiss army knife. His company, Victorinox, still makes these famous knives today.

The Creator of the Swiss Army Knife

Early Life and Training

Karl Elsener was born in a place called Schwyz, Switzerland. He learned how to make knives in a town called Zug. After finishing his training, he traveled to gain more experience. In 1884, he opened his own workshop in Ibach, Switzerland. Here, he made knives and tools for doctors.

Inventing the Swiss Army Knife

In 1891, Karl Elsener started making a special knife for the Swiss army. This knife was strong and had many tools. It became known as the Swiss army knife. He later developed an even better version. This new knife was lighter and more useful. It was very popular with soldiers and people everywhere.

Building Victorinox

Karl Elsener's company grew quickly because of his popular knives. He named his company Victorinox. This name combines "Victoria," his mother's name, with "inox," which means stainless steel. Today, Victorinox is a world-famous company. They still make the original Swiss Army Knives.

His Life and Legacy

Karl Elsener was also involved in local government. He served in the parliament of the Canton of Schwyz from 1912 to 1918. He was married and had children. After Karl Elsener passed away, his family continued his work. His son, Carl Elsener, and then his grandson, Carl Elsener Sr., and great-grandson, Carl Elsener Jr., have all led the Victorinox company. They have kept his vision alive for many years.
