Karl Ernst Wedel was a German confectioner who moved to Warsaw, Poland. He was born on February 7, 1813, and passed away on June 17, 1902. Karl Wedel started a very famous company called E. Wedel, which became one of Poland's top candy and chocolate makers.
Starting His Sweet Business
Karl Wedel arrived in Warsaw in early 1845. He began working with Karl Grohnert, who owned a candy shop on Piwna Street. Their teamwork was very successful. They gained many loyal customers who loved their treats.
Around 1851, Karl Wedel had enough money to start his own business. He opened his own store on Miodowa Street. Right next door, he built a factory that used steam power to make chocolate. This was the beginning of his famous company, E. Wedel.
Popular Products and Growth
Just one year later, Karl Wedel introduced a new candy. These were his "karmelki smietankowe," or "cream caramels." They quickly became very popular. He even advertised them in a newspaper called "Kurier Warszawski" to help spread the word.
Another big hit for Wedel was drinking chocolate. His store sold over fifty cups of hot chocolate every day! As time went on, he added more products. Some of his popular brands were "Brilliant" and "Dessert."
Family and Future
Karl Wedel married Karolina Wisnowska. Her father was also a well-known confectioner in Warsaw. In 1864, Karl's son, Emil Albert Friedrich Wedel, returned home. Emil had traveled to Germany, Switzerland, England, and France to learn more about making candy. He also earned a special degree in chemistry, focusing on food.
When Emil came back, he joined the family business. In 1876, Karl Wedel gave the company to his son Emil. This was a special gift for Emil's wedding day. This way, the sweet business stayed in the Wedel family.
