Kate Loder, Lady Thompson

Kate Loder (born August 21, 1825 – died August 30, 1904) was a talented English composer and pianist. She was also known as Lady Thompson after she got married. Kate Loder achieved many things in music during her lifetime.

Early Life and Musical Training

Kate Loder was born on August 21, 1825, in Bath, Somerset, England. Her family was very musical. Her father, George Loder, played the flute.

Kate Loder had many musicians in her family. Her mother was a piano teacher. She was also the sister of George Loder, who was a conductor and composer. Her cousin, Edward Loder, was also a composer.

Kate Loder studied music at the Royal Academy of Music in London. This was a very important music school.

Becoming a Music Professor

Kate Loder showed her amazing talent early on. When she was just 17, she performed a difficult piano piece. This was Mendelssohn's G minor piano concerto. She played it in public on May 27, 1843.

Just one year later, in 1844, Kate Loder made history. At only 18 years old, she became the first female professor of harmony at the Royal Academy of Music. This was a big achievement for a woman at that time.

Marriage and Later Musical Life

On December 16, 1851, Kate Loder married Sir Henry Thompson. After her marriage, her husband asked her to stop performing in public.

Even though she stopped public performances, Kate Loder stayed active in music. She continued to compose new pieces. She also taught music to students. One of her students was Sarah Louisa Kilpack, who later became a famous artist.

Hosting a Special Performance

Kate Loder's home was a place for important musical events. On July 10, 1871, a special concert happened there. It was the first time Johannes Brahms's famous work, the German Requiem, was performed in Britain.

This performance used a special version of the music for two pianos. It was called the "London Version" of the Requiem. Kate Loder played one of the pianos. She played alongside another famous musician, Cipriani Potter.

Kate Loder passed away on August 30, 1904.
