About Kathleen Walne
Kathleen Walne was born in Ipswich, England. She was the fourth of seven children in her family. As a child, she was often sick and missed a lot of school.
Starting Her Art Journey
In 1930, when she was 15, Kathleen got a special scholarship. This scholarship paid her £1 a week to attend the Ipswich Art School. She first joined the design class. Soon after, she moved to the painting class. There, she met Frank Ward, who would later become her husband.
In 1933, Frank moved to London to study art. He helped Kathleen by showing her paintings to art galleries. Many galleries said no at first. But then, Lucy Wertheim, who owned the Wertheim Gallery, agreed to help Kathleen. This was the start of a very long friendship between them.
First Exhibitions
Lucy Wertheim gave Kathleen her first solo art show in 1935. For a while, Kathleen even worked at the Wertheim Gallery.
Also in 1935, some of Kathleen's paintings were shown. They were part of a watercolour exhibition at the Salford Museum and Art Gallery. The Salford Art Gallery liked her work so much that they collected her art for many years. They even held a special show of her past works in 1986.
Family Life and Later Years
Kathleen Walne and Frank Ward got married in 1938. They had three children together. In 1939, Frank started teaching at a school in London. He taught there until he retired in 1974. He only left for a short time to serve in the army during World War II.
After the war, Kathleen and Frank lived in Chelsea. In 1968, they moved to Brighton. They went there to care for their friend Lucy Wertheim, who was ill.
Kathleen and Frank had two joint art shows together. One was in 1972 at the Compendium 2 Gallery. Another was in Brighton in 1975. In 1991, the Salford Art Gallery held a special show. It was called Adventure in Art. This show honored Lucy Wertheim and featured art by Kathleen.
Where to See Her Art
Besides the Salford Art Gallery, you can find Kathleen Walne's paintings in other places. The Towner Art Gallery in Eastbourne, England, has some of her works. The Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki in New Zealand also has examples of her art.
