Katja von Garnier's Journey in Film
Early Life and Studies
Katja von Garnier was born in Wiesbaden, a city in Germany. She loved films and decided to study filmmaking. From 1989 to 1994, she attended the University of Television and Film Munich. This is a special school where people learn how to make movies.
First Big Successes
In 1993, while still a student, Katja made a film called Making Up!. Even though it was a practice film, it became very popular. Over 1.2 million people watched it in theaters across Germany! Some movie producers didn't think a short film could be so successful, but Katja proved them wrong.
Later, in 1997, she directed another hit movie called Bandits. This film also did very well and won a big award. It received the Grand Prize at the 10th Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival in Japan in 1999.
Directing in the United States
Katja von Garnier's talent was noticed internationally. In 1999, she was asked to be a judge at the 49th Berlin International Film Festival. This is a very important film festival.
In 2002, she got the chance to direct a movie in the United States for the first time. This film was called Iron Jawed Angels. It was a TV movie made by HBO Films and came out in 2004. The movie was about the women's suffrage movement, which was a time when women fought for the right to vote.
