Early Life and Education
Kay Curley Bennett was born in New Mexico at the Sheepsprings Trading Post. Her father, Keddah, was a silversmith. Her mother was Mary Chischillie. Kay went to the Toadllena Boarding School. After school, she worked as a resident assistant. She also taught and interpreted at the Phoenix Indian School from 1945 to 1952.
A Career in Writing
Kay Curley Bennett became a well-known author.
In 1964, she published her first book, Kaibah: Recollections of a Navajo Girlhood. This book is her autobiography. It tells the story of her daily life as a young girl in New Mexico. The book covers the years from 1928 to 1935.
Her second book was A Navajo Saga. She wrote this novel with her husband, Russell Bennett. The story takes place between 1845 and 1868. The main character, Shebah, is based on Kay's own grandmother. This novel also shares details about the important historical event known as the Long Walk. The Long Walk was a difficult journey for the Navajo people.
Public Service and Recognition
Kay Curley Bennett was also active in public service.
Community Leadership
From 1969 to 1972, she served as a New Mexico Human Rights Commissioner. This role meant she worked to protect people's rights. She also advised the McKinley County Hospital. She was a member of the Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial Association. This group helps organize a big event celebrating Native American cultures.
Awards and Honors
In 1968, Kay was chosen as New Mexico's Mother of the Year. Her beautiful dolls won many awards at state fairs. She won prizes in both Arizona and New Mexico. Her doll-making skills were also praised at the Navajo Tribal Fair. Later, she was appointed to the staff of the governor of New Mexico. She also served on the board of directors for the Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial from 1974 to 1982.
