In ancient Egyptian mythology, Kebechet was a goddess. She was also known by names like Khebhut, Kebehut, Qébéhout, and Kabehchet. Her name means cooling water, and she was seen as the spirit of the special liquids used in embalming.

Who is Kebechet?

Kebechet was the daughter of Anubis, the god of mummification, and his wife Anput. Anput was often seen as the female side of Anubis. Kebechet was believed to live in the Duat, which was the Egyptian underworld.

Kebechet's Role

Kebechet was known as the goddess of freshness and purification. She played an important role in the mummification process. Ancient Egyptians believed she helped wash the insides of the deceased. She also brought sacred water to her father, Anubis, to help him with his duties.

People thought Kebechet gave water to the spirits of the dead. This happened while they waited for their bodies to be fully mummified. She was also thought to protect the body from decay. This helped the body stay fresh for the afterlife.

How Kebechet Looked

Kebechet was often shown as a snake. Sometimes, she appeared as a woman with the head of a snake. In a few rare cases, she was pictured as an ostrich. The ostrich was a symbol of Ma'at, the goddess of truth and justice. It is also said that Kebechet helped Anubis purify the mummies.
