The Keithley Log Cabin Development District is a special historic place. It is located in Manitou Springs, Colorado. This district is a group of old log cabins. They were once a camp and health resort. The district is so important that it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Historic Log Cabins
Two people, McLaughlin and Keithley, started this resort. They began building it in the early 1900s. It is a quiet, wooded area. There are 27 log cottages in the district.
These one-story cabins were built between 1920 and 1959. They have cool cobblestone foundations. Their chimneys and walls are also made of cobblestone. Many of them, 16 to be exact, were built in the 1920s. You can find these cabins on Spur, Chelton, Crystal Park, and Short roads. Today, these cabins are homes for people. Some live there all year, and others use them for the summer.
Everhard Keithley built six of these cabins himself. He turned a "rocky, hilly old goat pasture" into a beautiful 10-acre area. His granddaughter, Nancy Galles Bower, helps look after the district today. She also owns six of the cabins.
Who Was Everard S. Keithley?
Everard S. Keithley was a very important person. He worked for the Pike National Forest. From 1913 to 1946, he helped plant 30 million trees!
From 1926 to 1946, he was the forest superintendent. In this role, he did many important things. He helped develop tree nurseries. He also helped build Rampart Range Road. Keithley worked hard to open Gold Camp Road to the public. He also helped reforest areas that had lost trees. This happened because of wildfires, logging, or mining.
