Starting His Boxing Journey
Kelvin Seabrooks began boxing when he was 11 years old. He trained with the local Police Athletic League. During his amateur career, he won four North Carolina Golden Gloves championships. A big moment for him was winning a bronze medal at the 1980 Olympic trials. However, he did not get to go to the Olympics that year. The United States decided not to send its athletes to the Summer Olympics in Moscow. This was a protest against the Soviet Union's actions in Afghanistan in 1979.
Becoming a Professional Boxer
Seabrooks started his professional boxing career in 1981. In 1987, he won the United States Boxing Association (USBA) bantamweight championship. He then gave up that title to compete for a world championship.
Later that same year, he became the International Boxing Federation (IBF) world bantamweight champion. He won this title by knocking out Miguel Maturana in the fifth round of their fight in Cartagena, Colombia.
His first time defending his new title was against Thierry Jacob from France. This fight was first called a draw, but it was later changed to a win for Seabrooks. His next defense was clearer, as he beat Filipino boxer Ernie Cataluna in the fourth round. He eventually lost his IBF title to Orlando Canizales in 1988. Kelvin Seabrooks retired from boxing in 1995 after a series of losses.
