Kelvin Seabrooks' Boxing Journey
Starting Out: Amateur Boxing
Kelvin Seabrooks began his boxing journey at a young age. He was just 11 years old when he joined the Police Athletic League in his hometown. He quickly showed talent, going on to win four North Carolina Golden Gloves championships.
A big moment in his amateur career was winning a bronze medal at the 1980 Olympic trials. However, he didn't get to go to the Olympic Games that year. The United States decided not to send its athletes to the Summer Olympics in Moscow. This was a protest against the Soviet Union's actions in Afghanistan.
Becoming a Professional Boxer
Kelvin Seabrooks turned professional in 1981. He worked hard and climbed the ranks in the boxing world. In 1987, he won the United States Boxing Association (USBA) bantamweight championship. This was a major step in his career.
Soon after, he decided to go for an even bigger prize: a world championship. He fought for the vacant International Boxing Federation (IBF) world bantamweight title. In a thrilling match in Cartagena, Colombia, he won the title by knocking out Miguel Maturana in the fifth round.
Kelvin then defended his world title multiple times. His first defense against Thierry Jacob was a tough fight. It was first called a draw, but later ruled a win for Seabrooks. He then successfully defended his title against Ernie Cataluna. Kelvin eventually lost his IBF title to Orlando Canizales in 1988. He retired from boxing in 1995.
Later Life and Community Work
After retiring from boxing in 1995, Kelvin Seabrooks continued to be involved in his community. In 2003, he was honored for his achievements and inducted into the Carolinas Boxing Hall of Fame.
Today, Kelvin works as a security guard at schools in Charlotte-Mecklenburg. He also shares his boxing knowledge by training new boxers. He gives motivational speeches to students, encouraging them to work hard and succeed.
Kelvin Seabrooks is also working to create a non-profit organization. It will be called the Kelvin Seabrooks Sports & Education Center, Inc. This center aims to provide mentorship, tutoring, and fun activities for kids. Kelvin hopes it will be a safe place for young people to grow their skills and abilities, helping them on a positive path for their future. He lives with his wife in east Charlotte.
