Kenvir's Early Days
Kenvir was started in 1919 by a company called the Black Mountain Coal Company. It was built near Yocum Creek, which flows into the Clover Fork of the Cumberland River. The community got its name "Kenvir" because it was close to the border between Kentucky and Virginia.
In January 1921, the post office from a nearby place called Dizney was moved to Kenvir. It was then renamed the Kenvir post office. Roscoe Weaver was the first postmaster. Today, the Kenvir post office still serves the area with the ZIP Code 40847.
At its busiest time, Kenvir was a much larger place. It had about 5,000 residents. The community also had two schools for children, a hospital, five churches, and even a movie theater for entertainment.
