Early Life and Career

Ker Baillie-Hamilton studied at the Royal Military College in Woolwich. This was a place where people learned to become officers in the military. After his training, he served in places like Mauritius and the Cape of Good Hope. These were British colonies far from England.

In 1846, Hamilton became the governor of Grenada. A governor is like a leader or manager for a colony. They represent the ruling country, in this case, Britain. From 1851, he also managed Barbados and the Windward Islands.

Governor of Newfoundland

In 1852, Ker Baillie-Hamilton was chosen to be the governor of Newfoundland. At that time, Newfoundland was a British colony. His job was to oversee the colony's affairs for the British government.

During his time in Newfoundland, Hamilton had some disagreements. The people of Newfoundland wanted more control over their own government. This idea was called "responsible government." It meant that local leaders would make more decisions for the colony.

Hamilton made it harder for this change to happen. Because of this, the British government decided to move him. He was quickly transferred from Newfoundland in March 1855.

Later Appointments and Honors

After leaving Newfoundland, Hamilton was appointed governor of Antigua and the Leeward Islands. He continued his work as a colonial administrator there.

In 1862, he received a special honor. He was made a Companion of the Order of the Bath. This award recognized his important service to the British Empire.
