History of the Kester Cottages
The cottages were built in the 1930s by a man named William L. Kester. During that time, he built about 150 of these small houses in Pompano Beach. They were designed to be strong and affordable for families.
A Unique Design
Each cottage was a single-story house, about 25 feet (7.6 m) by 35 feet (11 m) in size. They were all painted white and had a very special feature on their shutters. The shutters were decorated with the four symbols from a deck of playing cards: spades (♠), clubs (♣), hearts (♥), and diamonds (♦). Back in the 1930s, one of these homes cost about $950.
The Cottages Today: A Museum
Today, two of the original Kester Cottages are preserved at a place called Founder's Park. They are no longer in their original spots. Instead, they were moved to the park to be used as a museum.
In 1974, the cottages were given to the Pompano Beach Historical Society. Now, they serve as a museum where visitors can step back in time and learn about the history of Pompano Beach. If you want to see them, you need to make an appointment.
