Kester Cottages facts for kids
The Kester Cottages at Founders Park are a special place in Pompano Beach. They are like a time capsule! These cottages are a historic site run by the Pompano Beach Historical Society. Inside, you can explore a local history museum. It shows what life was like in Pompano Beach in the late 1930s. Together, these cottages form the Pompano Beach Historical Museum.
What Are the Kester Cottages?
These two cottages are part of a much larger group. About 150 similar homes were built in Pompano Beach during the 1930s. A man named William L. Kester built them. Each cottage was about 25 feet (7.6 m) wide and 35 feet (11 m) long. They were built to be strong and affordable for families.
All the cottages had one story and were painted white. A fun detail was their shutters! They were decorated with the four symbols from a deck of cards: spades (♠), clubs (♣), hearts (♥), and diamonds (♦). Back then, one of these cottages cost around $950.
From Homes to a Museum
In 1974, two of these special cottages were given to the Pompano Beach Historical Society. They were carefully moved from their original spots. Their new home is now Founders Park.
Today, these cottages are not homes anymore. Instead, they are museums! They help us learn about the past and what life was like for people in Pompano Beach many years ago.
Visiting the Cottages
You can visit the Kester Cottages to see them for yourself. They are open to the public. However, you need to make an appointment first.
