Kevin Papatie is an Indigenous Canadian filmmaker. He is from the Algonquin community of Kitcisakik. This community is in the Abitibi region of Quebec. Kevin Papatie works with The Wakiponi Mobile. This is a special studio on wheels. It travels to Indigenous communities in Quebec. It teaches young First Nation people how to make films and videos.

Kevin Papatie's Film Journey

Kevin Papatie started his film career in 2006. He was one of the first young filmmakers from the Wapikoni Mobile program.

Early Films and Awards

His first short film was called Wabak. In this film, Papatie tells the story of the very first Algonquian person. It shows the good and bad things this young person experiences. Wabak won two awards for Papatie and his co-director, Gilles Penobsway. They received the Young Hope prize at the First Peoples’ Festival in Montreal in 2007. It also won Best Experimental Film at the Winnipeg Aboriginal Film Festival that same year. Later in 2006, he directed another short film called Le bon sens.

In 2007, Kevin Papatie released two short documentaries. These were Un grand départ (A Great Departure) and The Amendment. The Amendment won a special award. It received the Best Indigenous Language Production Award at the imagineNATIVE festival. This happened when it was shown at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival. Later, The Amendment was even shown in movie theaters. It played before a bigger movie called The Age of Ignorance. This film also won the Sony Image Prize in Brussels in 2008. In 2009, it won the Identity Award in Chile.

More Award-Winning Films

In 2008, Papatie released Entre l'arbre et l'écorce (Between Two Worlds). This film won an Artistic Creation award from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec. It also won the Identity Award in Chile, just like The Amendment.

His 2009 short film, Nous Sommes (We Are), was shown for the first time. The next year, it won the Discovery Prize. This award was given at the Festival de films de Portneuf sur l’environnement in Portneuf.

A scholar named Karine Bertrand has talked about Kevin Papatie's films. She says his work often explores important ideas. These include finding your identity and how traditions are passed down. His films also look at relationships between different generations. They show the challenges of balancing old traditions with modern life.
