Kiến Phúc (born February 12, 1868 – died July 31, 1884) was a young emperor of Vietnam. He ruled for less than eight months, from 1883 to 1884. He was the seventh emperor of the Nguyễn dynasty.
Early Life and Adoption
Kiến Phúc was born in 1868. His birth name was Nguyễn Phúc Ưng Đăng. He became the adopted son of Emperor Tự Đức. Emperor Tự Đức had no children of his own.
Kiến Phúc was adopted along with his cousin Dục Đức and his brother Đồng Khánh. This made him part of the royal family.
Becoming Emperor
After the previous emperor, Hiệp Hòa, left the throne, two important court leaders, Tôn Thất Thuyết and Nguyễn Văn Tường, quickly chose a new ruler. They decided that the fifteen-year-old Prince Kiến Phúc would become the next emperor.
Kiến Phúc was crowned emperor very early in the morning on December 1, 1883. He was still very young when he took on this big role.
His Short Reign
Emperor Kiến Phúc's time as ruler was very short. He reigned for only seven months and twenty-nine days. This makes him one of the shortest-reigning monarchs in history.
He often struggled with poor health during his life. He passed away in Kiến Thành Palace on July 31, 1884. He was only 15 years old.
