Kidds Store, Virginia facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Kidds Store is a small, historic place in Fluvanna County, Virginia. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a neighborhood or area that doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's part of the larger county. The name "Kidds Store" comes from a general store that was very important to the area for many years.

The Story of Kidds Store

The store that gave this community its name has a long history. It was a central place where people could buy goods and meet. Over the years, several families owned and ran the store. Each owner played a part in the community's story.

Early Owners: The Kidd Family

The store was first owned by James Taylor Kidd (1846-1918). He ran the store until he passed away. After James, his son, V.S. Kidd (1875–1927), took over the business. He continued to operate the store for several years.

When V.S. Kidd died, his wife, Charlotte "Lottie" Bledsoe Seay Kidd (1872–1955), managed the property. Instead of running the store herself, Lottie decided to rent it out to others. This kept the store active in the community.

New Owners and a Name Change

In the 1940s, Lottie's niece, Margaret Russell Seay Proffitt, and her husband, William Childress "Bill" Proffitt, bought the store. Bill Proffitt decided to give the store a new name. He called it Proffitts Store. He ran the store until he passed away in 1961.

After Bill's death, his wife, Margaret Proffitt, sold the store. The new owner was Garvey Lewis. Garvey Lewis kept ownership of the building itself. However, he sold the business part of the store to someone else.

The Kidd Name Returns

The business was sold to Charlie Kidd. This brought the "Kidd" name back to the store. Charlie Kidd became the owner and operator of the store's business. He was associated with the store for 50 years. This long connection made the "Kidd" name famous in the community once again.
