Discovering Kienstra: A Ghost Town's Story

Kienstra was a small community that existed for many years before becoming a ghost town. It had a unique location and played a role in the lives of the people who lived there.

Where Was Kienstra Located?

The town of Kienstra was built on a narrow piece of land called "Jackson Point." This land stuck out into the Mississippi River. The area was also near a curve in the river known as "Palmetto Bend." This name came from the many palmetto plants that grew in the nearby swamps of Louisiana, just across the river.

What Was Life Like in Kienstra?

Even though Kienstra was a small place, it had some important features for its residents.

  • Post Office: Kienstra had its own post office, which was very important for sending and receiving mail. This post office operated for a long time, from 1871 until 1957.
  • Morrisana Plantation: A large farm called the Morrisana Plantation was located right in Kienstra. Plantations were big farms that grew crops like cotton.
  • Kienstra School: Children in the area went to the Kienstra School. It was located north of the town, about halfway to another place called Arnot.
  • Kienstra Store Light: For boats traveling on the Mississippi River, there was a special navigation light called the "Kienstra Store Light." This light helped guide boats safely along the river as early as 1879.

How Many People Lived in Kienstra?

At its peak, Kienstra was a very small community. In the year 1900, the town had a population of only 35 people. Over time, like many small towns, Kienstra became uninhabited and is now considered a ghost town.
